I was hesitant to even do a color study on this one, because I've only worked with color a few times in my entire life and I didn't want to screw up such a great reference image. There's a ton of work left to do on this one, but I'll set it aside to work on other studies for the time being.
His head is too small, I dropped the ball on proportions quite a bit, because worrying about hue and value all at once had me shell shocked. The colors are kind of an ugly stew right now, but I suppose that's suiting for the "ugliest man in metal," Devin Townsend.
Speaking of Devy, I planned on listening to Strapping Young Lad or at least the Devin Townsend Band to put me in the mood for this painting, instead I listened to Chopin for the majority of time while working. Anyways, it's not an amazing painting, but it's a big jump for me to even attempt working with color, especially skin tones. I'll either continue this painting or re-attack the image all together sometime down the rode.
EDIT: I'm boggling as to why 5 of my newer deviations are missing under the 'newest' listing in my gallery as opposted the the 'most popular' listing, which shows them all. Curious...
No doubt. Townsend has alot of charisma despite his appearance. I love how he can poke fun at the genre he has invested so much in, yet he's also writing and performing some of the very best work the genre has to offer. Not to mention the work he does outside of metal. He's so eclectic and experiments, there's no telling what he'll do next. I can definitely respect that in any artist.
Anyways, I wish I could do his ugly mug some justice! I reckon I'll do a proper Townsend portrait once I get a better grasp of color. I call him ugly, but honestly I often find the most beauty in painting/drawing faces of character, whether its in the form of old wrinkles, loud facial expressions or skullets.
Justice?! I think this is definitely justice for Mr. Townsend. This is a very nice portrait. I love the motion blur of his dreads, and his EXPRESSION, it's so perfect. Devin just oozes power, and that really shows through this. (: Good on ya, I think this is very cool.
Very nice, he looks like he's in the middle of a SYL song (I think the painting transmits the dynamism and tension of that music -- I'm also listening to 'AAA' right now) .
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
